Trick or Treat: All the towns around here are waiting to see what the other towns are going to do about Halloween. Nobody wants to be The Place that Banned ToT. So I’m holding off buying candy until I know. If it’s on I think I’ll just leave a bucket full of candy on the front stoop and stay away from the feeding frenzy.

I can’t believe we are seriously talking about abandoning the peaceful transfer of presidentiial power after the election. This is the USA, not some banana republic. This would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. Have we really sunk this low? We should be laughing at Trump.

Today’s Craving: Cornbread.

You know, way back when, you could buy toaster cornbread right next to frozen waffles. They were not very good but you could do it. Also I think I remember cornbread in those Pop n Fresh cans. I think they are gone too. That’s all I got.

Current Rabbit Hole: Reaction videos on Youtube. Reason: Bored. Rationalization: It’s interesting seeing, particularly, young people encounter older music they have never heard before for the first time. I’m watching them on a voyage of discovery. Some reactors are better than others.

One of my favorites: Sincerely, K. S. O.

Also, you can drain a laptop battery pretty fast watching these.

It’s been a year and I’m not renewing my subscription to The Correspondent. It was worth trying but it’s not for me. YMMV.

Apple needs to return the fingerprint reader to the iPhone. For myself, I turned off Face ID on my XR and I’m using the access code again to unlock. Face ID isn’t terrible in day to day use pre-Covid 19, but it fails when I’m wearing a mask and even when I’m not it often fails at the most annoying times. Using a pass code is a sure thing and less subject to abuse.

I would still use a pass code to unlock the phone even if it had a fingerprint reader, but I would use the fingerprint reader for ApplePay and Apple Store, etc.

I just updated to iOS 14. I’m told I can pick my default browser, something I never thought would happen. Now I really wish Vivaldi browser was available for iPhones. @vivaldibrowser

Predictions: If Trump is not reelected:

  1. He will give himself a blanket Presidential pardon for anything and everything he’s ever done, just before he leaves office.

  2. Shortly after leaving office, he’ll move to some foreign country that he thinks is friendly to him.

  3. Once he’s out of office he’ll finally get himself banned on Twitter.

List of states I will not move to: California, Texas, Florida, Alabama, Missouri, Ohio. I reserve the right to add others at any time.

Long article but well worth reading, discussing where the US population will migrate to due to the effects of climate change. Climate Change Will Force a New American Migration

I just checked “The New Avengers” DVD price on Amazon: US $120 for 1976 season, used and near $300 for 1977 season. Crazy. I’ll have to pass. Fortunately I have all the original The Avengers episodes, that are extant on DVD, already.

Books are good. I like books. They are fortified with vowels, a good source of words, ideas, worlds and thoughts. And when you are done reading them you put them on a shelf and people think you are smarter than you really may be because you read books. But you just might be.

We’re in a perfect storm. Seems like everything is going wrong in the world at the same time. Too many things to count in the long parade of horribles. So it’s easier to find some good things. Er…

It rained today. We needed it.

Also it got cooler and I’m good with that too.

Microfibers: it’s not just our polyester fleece zipup that is shedding micro-fibers into the oceans and waterways, it’s our natural cotton blue jeans as well.

I can hear the squeak of the unoiled swingset in the park going on for hours. Swingsets are like hamster wheels for small humans.

History will record that the last great triumph of American civilization was the 50 cent greeting card at the dollar store. #romefellfromwithin

They are remaking the TV series, All Creatures Great and Small. Why? Why not just rerun the original? I can’t imagine ACGS without Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy. They played the characters so well.

Aug 2020

It’s 92 F, humid and intensely sunny. There is a 10 mph breeze which helps but it is hot. And I’m reading the first “Charlie Chan” detective novel while guzzling iced tea.

My 2016 Subaru Forester is at the dealer fixing two recalls from before the Covid lockdown, so it’s taking some time to repair. No hardship, they gave me a 2020 Legacy as a free loaner. That Subaru Legacy is really a nice car and it was fun getting to try it out.

The thing I like about my Forester is it has lots of headroom. So many cars built today don’t have any headroom and you have to be an acrobat just to get in and out.

I think all political Party conventions should be subdued like this DNC one is. It focuses the reportage on the speeches and avoids the distractions of drama manufactured for the cameras, cheesy rah-rah stuff, protests happening outside and endless studio talking heads at a traditional convention. It’s not lke there are any surprises anymore at these things, the candidate isn’t going to reject their own nomination so we may as well just focus on the speeches and get it done with minimal padding.

One lesson from this whole Trump presidency and Covid 19 crisis: we need to figure out a way to make US States less dependent on the Federal Government. Far too much money, material and power has been concentrated in Federal hands. This may mean States have to raise taxes but so be it.

Aug 2020

I don’t know if we can resurect the USPS in the 70 some remaining days before the US election. But I will vote. Even if I have to wear a Tyvek hazmat suit to the polls, I will vote, because Trump and the National Republican Death Cult must be stopped. Stopped cold.

Aug 2020

The US Postal Service (USPS) is a “government corporation” that is supposed to be run like a business. That’s not worked out well. The USPS needs to go back to being a government agency, like the Defense Department and the US Park Service. Government is not a business.

Kamala Harris. Good, I’m glad it’s somebody younger, qualified but younger, because the 70 year olds have had their day and it’s time for somebody with some energy.

Okay, so maybe the pyramids of Egypt were not built built by aliens, but I know a couple of highway interchanges here in #Indiana that had to be designed and built by them.
