Tipping and Tip Inflation

Tipping: back in the 1960’s small town/small city Midwest, a 10% tip for good service was considered usual and customary. 15% was added automatically as a tip in some really big cities, very fancy restaurants or for large parties of people but those were exceptions not the rule.

Tipping was very much a reward for good wait service, you did not tip someone for putting a sandwich together for you like at a Subway or fast food joint.

Somehow we have fallen into tip inflation, businesses no longer pay tipped employees enough to live on and we customers are expected to make up the difference with tips of 15 - 25% (maybe more) on dishes that already cost way more than they did back in the 1960’s.

This is not the fault of the person waiting on you, the blame falls on business owners and lawmakers.
