My local newspaper went out of business. It had been around for over 120 years and now it’s gone and that sucks because we don’t have much in the way of local news outlets.
So I subscribed to the last remaining regional newspaper - online edition. It’s regional which means it tries to cover 3 - 4 counties which means it will ignore news in my little town in favor of the bigger cities and towns around me, but still I’ll know that a new fast food joint opened three towns over, so that’s something.
I guess subscribing, which is not cheap BTW, is my attempt at keeping in touch with where I live. This is my reality and it’s important to be grounded here rather than only see news from Washington DC which is la-la land. And it’s important to support local journalism while I still can.
But still with all these failing local newspapers - I can’t help but think we are not in a good place in our society.
