Crime TV: Murder by the Lake. Series: German with subtitles.

Murder by the Lake streams on Mhz Choice. I just finished off Series 2. Good series, interesting setting and characters.

I haven’t heard of that one. I’ll look it up.🕵️‍♂️

@kulturnation @cheri The subtitles are very well done. Mhz Choice streaming service is very affordable and specializes in good foreign language crime/mystery TV shows so Murder by the Lake is one of many interesting shows. If anyone is interested I'll list my favorites.

@kulturnation I vastly prefer subtitles to dubbing. And I love foreign language mysteries. Japan’s Miss Sherlock is quite charming, for example.

I have a good friend from Germany who refuses to watch German mysteries. She says they’re too buttoned-up. I’ll have to try one.

@Cheri @kulturnation I agree on prefering subtitles over dubbing, although most Americans don't like subtitles. I wish these shows would have been around wayback when I was studying foreign languages. They really help immerse you in the spoken language.

The only other German police/crime drama I have watched to any extent is parts of the Tatort series. The parts I watched were from the 1990's based in Koln (Cologne) and teamed up the characters "Freddy and Max". The acting was excellent and the episodes very well done.

Mhz also has The Undertaker Swiss (in German) which is wonderful, quirky, dark and amusing all at the same time. In fact it's my 3rd favorite foreign language detective/mystery series of all the ones I've watched.

@Cheri @kulturnation I'm all-in with subtitles over dubbing. After 5 minutes they sort of disappear. I found it interesting that the Norwegian show Norsemen (which I loved) was shot in both Norwegian and English simultaneously. They filmed each scene twice!

@jack Hm, maybe I’ll have to subscribe again…

@jack Welsh show Hinterland went that route as well. Filming each scene in Welsh and then English.

@stevepbrady Seems like a lot more work for everyone than adding subtitles, but I do appreciate it :)

@kulturnation @cheri I had the same impression about The Team.

I've found most Scandinavian mysteries to be very well acted and plotted. But they are a gloomy lot and I always feel depressed after watching them so I generally avoid them.
