I had created two blog oriented webrings as an experiment.  It’s been over 6 months and no takers and maybe 3 tire kickers checking them out, so I’ve eliminated them. FYI.

I’ve never been big on the tag cloud displayed in the stock WordPress widget.  I’ve wanted something neater.  I may have found it in Cool Tag Cloud plugin.  It’s not exactly what I want but it is better than what I had.  Implemented.

Theme:  Today I briefly switched the theme from Sempress to Zenpress.  I found out Zenpress does not have a sidebar option so I dumped it and went back to Sempress.

I need to figure out what I want to do here on Ramblinggit.  I think this winter I need to dump some things that are not working.

Nominated Things to Dump:

  1. My two webrings.  No interest so they should go.
  2. Guestbook – it’s a nice plugin, but no interest so it should go.
  3. Free public domain ebooks
  4. Blog directory

I just installed the new Aperture WordPress plugin.  I’m not real clear on what it does but it gives me access to Aperture and Microsub and, maybe, Monocle so it’s going in the direction towards an Internet home, which is good.

I’ve been kinda waiting for this, but also stalling a little to see how thing go.  This brings me closer and makes the process easier which is great.

To Do’s

Internal ads:  I need to look into ad or banner system plugins for WordPress.  I don’t need it right now but will need.  I am not talking about Adsense or outside ads, but I need to drive some traffic to my own content.  The big example would be the Blog Directory.  I need to let people know it is there.

Graphical banner ads are a pain.  Mainly because I’m terrible at making graphics.  The other thing is they can screw up the view on mobile.  The good thing is you set up the campaigns and forget it.

Text ads? Maybe.  Worth trying.

Placement?  I hate ads between paragraphs in articles but it is effective.

I need to think this through and see what free plugins are available.

More directory listings:  I need to add more.  I could easily add the famous blogs, but that really isn’t the focus of the blog directory, which is hopefully for good new or unfound blogs – the underappreciated.  Will work on this.

I’m starting to think the EU’s nasty attitude towards UK leaving is mostly fear combined with a bit of miff.  The EU is afraid.  Britain was the stabilizer for the EU, the big nation-state with massive democratic political legitimacy and insulated from continental tribal history.

Wiki plugin – potential uses. research needed.

Knowledge Base plugin – potential uses, better than wiki for me? research needed.

Start another webring – want to test webrings in 2018 with broader subject for, traffic, discovery.  Are webrings too passive? Is this worth the work?

Alt. Join an existing webring.

I’ll say one thing for WordPress: there is no shortage of boxes you need to check/uncheck before you can post.  😀   So testing putting nothing in the title on a post.

I had all notifications from Mastodon turned off.  I just turned them on. Because? More and more people I know are finding me and more engagement from strangers on Mastodon. Twitter refugees?
