WP.com is not for the individual blogger anymore, it’s for eCommerce, pros and corporations now. Granny’s knitting blog days are numbered. You can’t install plugins until you pay at least $25 per mo.! Which means you can’t get rid of the block editor until you pay $25 per mo either. One of the best parts of WP is their plugin system but not at that kinda price.
\n\nAlso they have the option to split “WordAd” revenue, so it sounds like WP has built their own advertising network.
\n\nAt least, there is no mistaking Automattic’s intentions now, they don’t care about the little guy/gal, it’s all about money and managed hosting schemes. No wonder that smaller blog hosting companies like Micro.blog, Write.as and others are springing up all over. They are filling the vacuum WP.com is creating at the affordable end of the cost range.
\n\nMy prediction is that things like WP Reader will be allowed to atrophy since SEO’s, enterprise and corporate suits have no interest in community or reading some schmuck’s cat or travel blog.

\n\nI guess I’m in a minority here but for me, a blog platform needs to have the option of native commenting that I can turn on or off. It also needs to be protected from comment spam. Both of those features together require a lot of work coding which is why many “light weight” blog platforms don’t support comments.
\n\nI like both webmentions and comments. In webmentions make me sad Alex sums up my feelings pretty well.
\n\n\n\n\nEvery blog without a comment section makes me sad.
\n\nEvery blog that only allows webmentions makes me sad.
\n
Blogs are about communication and by my way of thinking, communication needs to be a two way thing at least some of the time. Native comments allow any reader to communicate a response to my post. Native commenting does not require, joining something, timelines, webmention plugins, having a blog to comment.
\n\nSo back to my quest for blog platforms. Every single one seems to come with some sort of gotcha. Either it’s missing some needed feature, it’s vague about it’s features, you have to upgrade to an overpriced service level to make it usable, or the parent company which owns the service is creepy or unstable. The quest ain’t going good.
\n\nI’m thinking maybe the solution is to just avoid hot button subjects and keep my thoughts to myself. That makes me sad, but I’m a big boy so I can withstand a bit of sadness.
